Two agencies are issuing a Notice of Intent to issue a
proposed rule that announces plans for setting fuel economy and greenhouse gas
emissions standards for light-duty vehicles of model year 2017 and
beyond. The agencies will have their plan for doing so in
late November.
The EPA and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration jointly released a Federal Register notice on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, announcing the agencies' intentions to create a coordinated program under the CAA and 2007 Energy Act to mandate improved fuel efficiency and to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of light-duty vehicles for model years 2017-2025. President Obama demanded such be accomplished in a May memo.
The agencies plan to issue a supplemental notice on Nov. 30, 2010 that will describe plans for the national program, including an updated analysis of potential GHG and fuel economy standards for model years 2017-2025.
Comments should be submitted by Oct. 31, 2010.
