The EPA on Monday
sent out a warning to facilities required to submit updated risk management
plans (RMPs), that haven't yet done so, and noted it will soon begin issuing
fines against companies that do not. The plans, required under the Clean Air
Act, contain information assessing plans in place to prevent and respond to
accidental releases of hazardous substances from facilities, and must be
updated at least every five years.
EPA regional offices continually identifies facilities that currently have risk management plans in place to see which plans are overdue. Some regions that find facilities that have not updated their plans on time, have offered those businesses a chance to pay a discounted penalty. All regions now can accept these plans online at www.epa.gov/emergencies/rmp.
