Upcoming Advisory Board Meetings Could Direct Air Policy

The EPA on Thursday announced several important Science Advisory Board (SAB) meetings, which could have profound influence on the direction of environmental regulation in the coming years. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, in almost every public address so far, reiterated a commitment to allowing science to direct policy. It is speculated that the sentiment has put increased importance on what is said in these advisory committee meetings, which were often ignored in the previous administration.

Ozone: The SAB Staff Office announced on Thursday a public teleconference of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee Ozone Review Panel to conduct a consultation on the EPA's draft Integrated Review Plan for the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Ozone. The teleconference will be held on Monday, March 30, 2009, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Particulates: Also on Thursday, the office announced a public meeting of the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Particulate Matter Review Panel to peer review the EPA's Integrated Science Assessment for Particulate Matter: First External Review Draft and conduct a consultation on the agency's draft plans for Particulate Matter National Ambient Air Quality Standards: Scope and Methods Plan for Health Risk and Exposure Assessment and Particulate Matter National Ambient Air Quality Standards: Scope and Methods Plan for Urban Visibility Impact Assessment The public meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. (Eastern Time) and Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Eastern Time), at the Carolina Inn, 211 Pittsboro Street, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27516.
