The United States House of Representatives on Wednesday
passed the Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009 (HR 146), a package of
bills that gives official Congressional recognition to the 26 million acres of
the Bureau of Land Management's National Landscape Conservation System.
The bill was already approved by the Senate and is expected to be signed by President Obama. The bill received bipartisan support and disapproval, with opponents expressing concern that it would prevent oil and gas speculation on about 5 percent of U.S. land.
