The Sierra Club and United Steelworkers on Thursday jointly
endorsed Barack Obama for president.
Carl Pope, the Executive Director of the Sierra Club joined Leo Gerard, the leader of America's largest industrial union, and Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, in making the announcement.
"We believe Senator Obama is the change our nation needs - he is the change we need, the leader who will put America on the path to a clean energy economy that will create and keep millions of jobs, spur innovation and opportunity, make us a more secure nation, and help us solve global warming," said Pope.
The group has endorsed the Democrat Party candidate in every presidential election since Walter Mondale in 1984. However, with an environmental stance that differs largely from that of his party at times, Republican candidate John McCain had held out hope for endorsements from environmental groups.
