According to experts
from Yale and Columbia universities in a study released in late January,
Switzerland is the greenest country on Earth. The Scandinavian bloc of Sweden,
Norway and Finland followed.
The United States was listed at 39 of the 149 countries that were tracked. That was well below some other industrialized nations such as the United Kingdom, at 14, or Japan, at 21. A total of 22 European Union countries outranked the U. S.
The committee believed that the efforts in the U.S. to improve air quality and ecosystems were below par with the country’s capability. The first report was released in 2006, in which the U.S. had been ranked 28. There was no report in 2007.
