A pressurized tank of SO2 was accidentally breached at a trucking company in New Jersey, exposing 52 people, and causing many of them to vomit and have difficulty breathing.
The incident occurred as a worker attempted to disassemble a pressurized tank containing the gas. The neck of the tank cracked open, quickly exposing others in the area. Hazardous materials teams arrived to seal the tank while authorities evacuated and cordoned off a 4-mile area.
The exposed personnel were decontaminated and transported to local hospitals. According to the city’s fire director, Onofrio Vitullo, none of the victims’ injuries appeared to be serious.
