Rivers Collect More Than Dirt

Scientists analyzed 125 samples collected from sites in the state of Colorado between October 2002 and September 2003. The results indicated that byproducts from everyday activities are ending up in the rivers, streams and groundwater in the state. In addition to urban waterways, compounds including anti-bacterial soap, fire retardants, caffeine, steroids, prescription drugs, insecticides and pesticides were also found in remote areas and rural water wells.

In all, 62 compounds were identified. All of the regulated compounds were within guidelines, but many have no standards. Determining the potential long-term effects of the chemicals, their sources and developing treatment methods would likely take many years and millions of dollars. The chemical nonylphenol, known to cause problems with fish reproduction and growth, is a remnant of detergent and was found in high concentrations in urban areas. Anti-bacterial disinfectants, such as those found in hand soaps, can increase resistance to bacteria. To read the report visit http://co.water.usgs.gov.
