According to a Tokyo metropolitan government survey, levels of suspended particulate matter met national environmental standards at 97 percent of checkpoints in F.Y. 2004, compared to only 12 percent in 2003. There are 34 checkpoints located along national highways and crossings. The national standard is a maximum of 0.1 milligrams per cubic meter of air. The successes noted are credited to regulations that govern diesel exhaust emissions.
