European Union (EU) Commissioner Philippe Busquin was quoted to say, “Safe and clean nuclear energy is a priority for sustainable development. It can greatly contribute to meeting Kyoto Treaty requirements. And there is a clear need for EU action to pool together know how and resources in state of the art nuclear research at European level.”
The Commission earmarked 750 million Euro Dollars to fund nuclear fusion research. They hope to begin construction of a large International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor facility in the next few years. They are also seeking to have the United States rejoin the research effort to develop the nuclear fusion efforts.
