On September 12, 2002, EPA published the proposed effluent limitation guidelines and standards for three subcategories of aquaculture to address nutrient pollution. The limitations apply to discharges from the concentrated aquatic animal production (CAAP) industrial point source category. CAAPs include fish farms, fish hatcheries, shellfish farms, and certain aquariums and botanical gardens. The regulation proposes new technology-based effluent limitation guidelines and standards for wastewater discharges associated with the operation of new and existing CAAP facilities. EPA estimates that compliance with the regulation would reduce the discharge of total suspended solids by 4.1 million pounds per year, and result in similar reductions of other pollutants. Comments are due on or before December 11, 2002.
