The EPA is specifically interested in how regional development patterns such as new housing, roads, commercial development and mass transit systems will affect the amount and distribution of air pollution emissions from mobile sources. The agency plans to use the research in producing methods for creating plausible North American emission scenarios for air quality models 50 years into the future.
Research grants will be awarded through the EPA Science to Achieve Results, or STAR, program. Academic institutions, nonprofit organizations and tribal, state and local governments are eligible to apply. The deadline for submitting grant proposals is Feb. 5, 2004.
