Screenings System Eliminates Disposal Costs
Meriden, CT – Installation of a new system that grinds, washes, compacts, and dewaters bar screenings at the Meriden (CT) Water Pollution Control Facility here has eliminated remote landfill disposal costs, while reducing handling and odor.
The Screenings Washer Monster® device, originally installed in May, 2000, is manufactured by JWC Environmental® of Costa Mesa, CA, which has a patent pending for it. The system is now being replaced by a larger unit in order to double capacity to 300 cu.ft. (2.55 cu.m.)/hr.
“Before the landfill adjacent to our site was closed, all we had to do was haul the screenings over there,” recalled Robert T. Mercaldi, Assistant Director, Water Pollution Control Division, Dept. of Public Works, and manager of the 11.6 mgd plant. “After the closure, we had to find a special hauler, meet their special requirements, and pay landfill drop-off charges,” he said. “Meanwhile, we had a burdensome and odorous new task to take care of in the plant.”
“Then we found out JWC had developed a new piece of equipment for this situation, and installed it without the need for any outside contractors,” he stated. “It’s basically totally unattended, we haven’t had any problems with it, and we’ve reduced the weight and volume of our bar screenings by about 95%.”
The Screenings Washer Monster is also available in a grinder-less version for use with the company’s Auger Monster® system.
