For nearly 20 years, Rusmar Incorporated has been providing an effective technology to control odors and harmful emissions during excavation and storage of contaminated soils. What was once considered an innovative concept has now become a widely accepted and preferred method of emission abatement.
Rusmar’s Long Duration Foam was recently used to control odors from xylene during excavation within a 1 million barrel tank dike. “Rusmar products allowed us to complete the project with no off-site odors, keeping us in compliance with the client’s requirements,” explains Remedial Construction Services, Inc. Senior Project Manager Troy Butt. “Their input during the product selection process, timely response with regard to delivery dates, and outstanding on site technical support all contributed to RECON’s success.”
New Jersey based Creamer Environmental, Inc. has been utilizing Rusmar’s technology for years. At a PSE&G former Manufactured Gas Plant, foam was used to control odors during excavation of 250,000 tons of MGP-contaminated soil and debris. “The foam helped in minimizing employee complaints of odors during excavation and loading of the soil. Using foam also reduced physical stress on the workers, who didn’t have to wear respirators as frequently as they would if we had not foamed the piles,” says CEI Project Engineer Gregg Eiband.
Kelchner Environmental, located in Dayton, OH, was awarded a remediation contract at an active manufacturing plant located in Sanborn, NY. The project required excavation of 5,000 tons of soil containing TCE and vinyl chloride in concentrations exceeding 10,000 ppm, which caused concern over worker exposure exceeding IDLH levels. Kelchner proposed applying Rusmar Long Duration Foam during excavation and placement in an on-site treatment cell. Within minutes of applying the foam, air-borne concentrations were reduced from thousands of parts per million to background levels. Work crews were able to work in Level C PPE rather than Level B, and the entire project was completed under time and under budget.
